CARMEL WOODS, Monterey County — October 29, 2026. A neighborhood water-system upgrade completed this summer replaced pump-station equipment dating to 1961, according to California American Water. The utility announced completion on August 27. The work is distinct from the Carmel Woods sewer-pipeline reconstruction currently proceeding through a separate bidding process.
What changed at the pump station?
The utility says crews built the replacement station into a steep slope behind an existing water tank, remaining within the site’s footprint. Double sound doors and the site’s position are intended to lessen mechanical noise heard by nearby residents. New structural piers and retaining walls support the facility, while a roof vault and lifting crane allow workers to remove pumps for maintenance.
The completed project also involved new piping, updated electrical equipment, a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system for monitoring and operations, an underground trench drain, safety railings and walkways. These are improvements to the station’s infrastructure; the company has not published measurements in its announcement showing the amount of noise reduced or quantified changes in service interruptions.
What happens to the older water tanks?
California American Water identifies two existing 50,000-gallon tanks near the former pump station. It says the tanks are slated for replacement under a future infrastructure project. Its August announcement does not establish a construction start date for those replacements, and they should not be treated as completed.
Why residents should care
Pump stations help maintain drinking-water delivery in neighborhoods where topography and system design require active pumping. For Carmel Woods residents, the practical issues to follow are operating reliability, noise, and the later tank project. Questions about individual water service should go to the utility, not to the wastewater agency responsible for sewer work.

Editorial note: This is an October 29 follow-up on infrastructure reported complete in August, not an assertion that construction ended today. All technical details are attributed to the utility.
